Into the Spirit of Sport

Bolton, December 28, 2006

A few team members from Bolton Majorettes were lucky enough to be honoured with a lasting mark on a Bolton landmark at the Middlebrook Development near the famous Reebok Stadium, the home of Bolton Wanderers Football Club.

The Spirit of Sport statue stands 100 feet tall and is almost a third taller than the Angel of the North. The sculpture is constructed of stainless steel and has a 'golden' appearance with its surface 'tiled' with 900 etched images of sporting heroes.

The sculpture has been commissioned by Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council and designed by leading artists Terry Eaton, Jem Waygood and Dave Howie of Eaton Waygood Associates. At a cost of £320,000, this is a highly ambitious project designed to symbolise and represent everything that is good about sport and sporting values. The sculpture will recognise not only those who achieve sporting greatness, but also those who strive towards that greatness, and those who make that greatness possible. Every year after its installation, the general public will be asked to nominate and vote for sporting stars or facilitators to have their image placed on the sculpture (in the form of the etched 'tiles') in recognition of their dedication and our sense of pride in their achievement.

Bolton Majorettes attended the recent celebration day held at Bolton Arena and had the opportunity of meeting "Big Sam" Allerdyce and risingboxing star Amir Khan.
